How it is calculated
- Adding VAT: VAT = price × rate ÷ 100, and the final price = price + VAT.
- Removing VAT: price before VAT = VAT-inclusive price ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100). Example at 15%: 115 ÷ 1.15 = 100, so the VAT is 15.
A common mistake is taking 15% of the VAT-inclusive price directly (115 × 15% = 17.25). That is wrong, because the VAT was calculated on the price before it was added.
