How is the start of Ramadan determined?

We use the astronomical Umm al-Qura calendar. The actual start of the month is announced after the new moon is sighted and can differ by one day between countries, so follow the official announcement where you live.

The countdown runs to midnight at the start of the first day, so the moon-sighting night and the first Taraweeh prayer come a few hours earlier.
